 2002 Awardees

Arizona Hall of Fame

On November 7, 2002, Arizona was witness to the induction of 20 distinguished men and women into the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame as the "Class of 2002."  This gala affair was at the Shrine Temple.

The Chapter had three Honorees, pictured left to right, Terry Tassin, Bill Toy, and Senator Tom Smith.  They are shown along with Joanne Thompson wife of Bill Thompson (deceased) who was inducted in the inaugural Class 2001. This speaks highly for the Chapter and its membership caliber.

Again pictured, left to right, are LCDR Terry Tassin, USN (Ret) who was recognized for his Navy service as well as for his 20 years of exceptional achievements during his tenure as a JROTC instructor; LTC Bill Toy, USA (Ret) for his Army service as well as for his life long support and commitment to both veteran's organizations and his community including service as president of the Arizona Chapter of TROA; and LtCol and Arizona State Senator Tom Smith, USMC (Ret) for his Marine Corps service as well as for his tenacious legislative efforts and generous support of all veterans issues as a member of the Arizona state legislature.

Also inducted was Representative Bob Stump (AZ), and it was announced that the building which will house the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame will be named in his honor.

The awards consisting of a medallion and a plaque were presented by Governor Jane D. Hull and Patrick Chorpenning, Director of the Arizona Department of Veterans' Services.

Web Ellis, Chairman of the Unified Arizona Veterans, opened the festivities (pictured right).

The Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame was established in 2001 to honor veterans who distinguished themselves for meritorious service and exceptional contributions and dedication to the veterans community after separation from active duty.  The "Class of 2001" included all Arizona veterans who received the Congressional Medal of Honor.  Also included were Arizona Chapter member LTC Bill Thompson, USAF (Ret) and the late Senator Barry Goldwater.
